Animating Hair In Blender

I was recently answering questions on Blender Artists, and I found that there were a couple of questions that came up quite a lot. One of these was how to animate hair. When I myself was looking for a guide on how to, I too, had trouble finding the answer. The reason that people have trouble finding it, is that the feature is called hair dynamics and is never referenced as a way to animate hair in the Blender manual. Because of this, people have trouble finding it.

To use hair dynamics to animate hair, all you have to do is go into particle settings and check the checkbox next to Hair Dynamics. This will give you a dropdown with some different options.

  • Stiffness
  • Mass
  • Bending
  • Internal Friction
  • Collider Friction
  • Spring
  • Air
  • Steps

Material

Stiffness – Controls how stiff the root of the hair strands are.

Mass – Controls the mass of the cloth material.

Bending – Controls the amount of bend along the hairs. Higher values cause less bending.

Internal Friction – Controls the amount of friction between individual hairs.

Collider Friction – Controls the amount of friction between hairs and external collision objects.

Damping

Spring – Controls the damping of cloth velocity. (higher = more smooth, less jiggling).

Air – Air has normally some thickness which slows falling things down.

Quality

Steps – Controls the quality of the simulation in steps per frame. (higher is better quality but slower).

I find that the default settings work well for most use cases, but always experiment with the settings to find what works well for your project.

Hair dynamics work right from the start and it acts no differently from usual hair. It may not look like something is happening, but try putting a force field in there like wind, and you will see it start to move.

I hope that you found that helpful and easy to follow. If you liked it, please follow my website and my twitter page. Thanks!
